Lady Skorski is Canadian - born and raised. She has one daughter and two granddaughters, still residing in Canada. Lady had been in two abusive and oppressive marriages that had left her with physical and emotional scarring. One of her ex-husbands had stabbed her, beat and raped her, then shot her through a door with his rifle. Another ex-husband oppressed her so much that she started believing she was useless, filthy, and worth nothing. During these previous marital relationships, she suffered a still-born son after numerous beatings and being pushed down a steep flight of stairs while in her ninth month of pregnancy, a miscarriage after more beatings, and the premature delivery of her daughter. Her faith was strong, though, because of God's promises in Scripture. She never doubted He had a plan for her. Lady decided to move to the US in 1996, making southwest Colorado her home. She firmly believes she is where God has guided her to be spiritually...to share her love for Christ and lead others to His loving embrace.
Her husband, Joseph, is American by way of Poland. He arrived to the United States when he was four years old. He, too, had a life of hardship. He served 8 years in the military and in 1985 was honorably discharged, and is now retired. In April 1989, while returning home from work on his motorcycle, he was hit "head-on" by a pickup truck driven by a drunk driver doing 65 miles per hour. Having gone through the pickup windshield, he suffered a traumatic brain injury (TBI) which placed him in a coma. Not to mention the numerous broken bones, etc! He was four months (minus one day) in that coma. He was diagnosed as "Brain-Dead", "Flat-lined", then "Vegetable" after the third month had gone by. His buddy from the Navy (a retired Corps Man) went to talk with the doctors and argued on Joseph's behalf to wait a while longer before disconnecting him. The doctors tried to persuade Joseph's friend by mentioning that "IF" he ever pulled out of the coma, he would be a "vegetable" the rest of his life. He woke up from that coma the day before he was scheduled to have his respirator, monitors and other life-sustaining attachments removed. He stayed at the hospital for two years and underwent rehabilitative treatments (re-learning how to walk, talk and perform the daily routines we all too often take for granted). Today, he still suffers minor short-term memory and cognitive functioning difficulties such as, not remembering topics of conversations from the previous five minutes (yet permanently remembering them two weeks later) and sometimes having difficulty remembering certain words for certain things (but when given a few extra seconds, he remembers) and finally, a slight speech impediment similar to a "lazy-lip". Joseph is a functioning, rational, warm-hearted and intelligent human being. Had his life-sustaining equipment been unplugged back in July of 1989, we would not have been blessed with him in our lives today! He is a walking, talking testimony of our precious God-given life and purpose!
Joseph and Lady serve the Lord on a daily basis while riding their "scoots". They are seen riding all year round . . . rain or shine, sleet or snow . . . in Colorado weather! As they often say when folks ask them how they can ride in those conditions, "It'll change in five or ten minutes . . . you'll see!"
Word On Wheels® originated in 2002 when our founder, Lady Skorski, was out riding one day and met some folks who asked her if she was with the CMA, because they heard her speaking to others about Jesus Christ. She replied, "No, I'm with Christ". She had heard of the CMA before and had even met a few members at different rallies. She also knew of some of the good works they did. When she returned home from her ride, she looked up "CMA" and other Biker Ministries on the Internet and read all about their organizations, along with their respective membership requirements, regulations, fees and dues. To be a member of any such "huge" organization is very costly! But, after much contemplation and prayer, Lady and Joseph decided not to pursue membership in any "major" organization because many of them are operated too much like major corporations rather than a ministry. They wanted to stay close to God and His teachings. They felt there was a need out there; for the Truth to find its way into the hearts of the thirsty, without a business plan. Only Christ's love. They decided they were going to bring His love and His message of peace, comfort and hope to everyone they would meet while riding. The Word of God and His Truth would come to many, on wheels! Discipleship. Two by Two. One soul at a time.
They knew that many didn't go to church to hear God's teachings, and that some were even afraid of walking into a church because they felt they wouldn't meet the approval gazes from the "church ladies", or wouldn't receive the brotherly welcome from the "church elders". When Lady and her husband sit down with a homeless brother or sister, with a runaway youth, with another biker or just someone down on their so-called "luck", it's like sitting down at a family reunion and being surrounded by the love of Christ. Lady shares her testimony and Joe shares his. They will talk and listen about daily happenings, what's in the news (and what ought to be), what hurts and joys they've had throughout their lives, and share anything else that comes up. When all is said and done, 99% of the time the person asks questions about Christ and His teachings. Others will sometimes listen in when Lady or Joe reads a verse from the Bible or share their testimonies. Sometimes it's a whole group and other times it's only a 'one-on one'.
There is no hypocrisy when you meet Lady or Joe. They are two of the most sincere and down-to-earth people anyone can meet. They don't discriminate, judge, or look down on anyone. They will sit down and talk to anyone. And, the best part of it all is, by the time they must get up and leave, they've planted the seed of hope!
